(Austin.CityRegions.Com, February 17, 2014 ) Austin, Texas -- Braking coins with a magnetic field isn't something you see everyday. It turns out to be a great way to demonstrate Lenz's Law in action. Most commonly, a neodymium magnet is dropped down a copper or aluminum pipe to demonstrate this phenomenon. The magnet takes several seconds to make it though the pipe and out the bottom. But you have no visual of the magnet while in the pipe.
By setting up a neodymium magnetic slide and using items that everyone is familiar with, coins, the demonstration becomes more of a memorable moment.
The magnetic slide is set up by using small but powerful neodymium magnets. They are only 1/2 inch long, 1/4 inch wide, and 1/8 inch thick. They are magnetized through their thickness and are set up with each other magnet's poles reversed. In other words, the first magnet will have the north pole up, the second magnetic will have the south pole up.
With four magnets across it is wide enough for a quarter and so enough for the demonstration. They used 44 of these small neodymium Power Bar magnets for the slide.
The magnetic slide was placed on a wooden board wide enough to hold two quarters side by side. One coin is held at the top of the slide and another coin is held next to it on the wood. They are then dropped at the same time and it is easy to see the coin on the wood drops faster than the coin on the neodymium magnetic slide.
This difference in dropping rate is explained by Lenz's Law. It basically says that when you have a conductive item moving through a magnetic field a current is generated and a electromagnetic field of opposite polarity is the result. This explains why the coin on the magnetic slide is slowed down. This is magnetically braking due to Lenz's Law.
This is a great demonstration for the home schooled or any class of learning that needs to learn of how magnetism affects conductive material even when they are not magnetically attractive. Using coins helps bring it home.
