(Austin.CityRegions.Com, December 19, 2015 ) Austin, Texas -- Austin, TX - Wonderkul announced today that it has added Sandalwood Mala Beads to its growing list of online product offerings.
A Wonderkul spokesperson was quoted as saying "In this busy, hi-tech world, we hope that people will try this traditional, lo-tech, tool—the mala or Buddhist prayer beads—in conjunction with a simple mediation or mindfulness practice, to help them cultivate a calm, peaceful mind. Even a few minutes a day will provide noticeable results."
Nowadays, people wear sandalwood mala beads as a wardrobe accessory, but more traditionally, they are used in conjunction with meditation and prayer. For thousands of years, Hindu and Buddhist teachers have realized and taught the benefits of a regular meditation—or mindfulness—practice. Reported benefits include improved focus, a calmer mind, greater creativity and mental elasticity. And now science is finding evidence that it's true! People can realize benefits to their overall health and well being by incorporating a regular mediation and/or mindfulness practice into their daily routine.
The use of mala beads while meditating adds another dimension to the practice. A mala ("garland" in Sanskrit) is a string of beads used to count, while reciting, or chanting, mantras or prayers. Different traditions have different protocols for using a mala, but the basic technique is to hold the mala in one hand. Start with the bead next to the guru bead (the 109th bead, which hangs perpendicular to the counting beads) between the thumb and middle finger. Say a mantra, and then roll the bead through the finger and thumb, advancing to the next bead. Continue advancing one bead with each recitation until back at the guru bead. If one wants to continue, change directions, rather than crossing the guru bead, and begin the recitations again. Each complete time around the mala is 108 recitations. The sensation of the beads between the fingers serves as tactile cue that helps keep the mind alert and focused on the mantra or prayer.
"It's encouraging to read more articles and findings that support what many ancient traditions have long known, that a regular meditation practice can be very beneficial to your overall health and happiness. And it's great to see the traditional practices being supported and encouraged in today's busy world. I'm convinced that we'd all be a little happier if more of these kinds of lo-tech solutions—like meditating with a mala—became a part of our modern traditions," stated a Wonderkul spokesperson. She added with a smile "And a mala always make a nice wrap bracelet."
